Introduction
Libraries are magical places where many students find refuge, not only in the physical space but also the books housed there. Between December 2024 and July 2026 Ranelagh library sadly had to close due to necessary roof maintenance. For nearly two academic years students were without this safe haven which was keenly felt by many.
Thankfully, as of September 2026, the library was reopened with a brand new ceiling and a charming new motto: ‘Every library is a dragon’s lair, filled with priceless treasure.’ And it couldn’t be more true. Books are not simply a way to gain knowledge and improve reading ability. They allow us travel to other worlds, embrace new cultures and ideas, as well as gain insight into who we are and want to be.
With a range of fiction and non-fiction, genres and styles, we hope there is something for everyone.
Opening Times
Before school 8:30am - 8.50am
Break 11:20 - 11:50
Lunch 12:50 – 1:35
After school Monday - Thursday 4:15pm, Friday 4:00pm
During these times students can sign out books, read, use computers for homework or printing, study or get a book recommendation from our full-time librarian. Students can stay after school to wait for crowds to disperse or await pickup at a later time.
Our Resources
6 computers occupy the 6th form study area, which can be used by all students at break and lunch for completing homework, doing extra study or printing. Our librarian is always on hand to support students with technical difficulties or homework queries that might arise.
Our non-fiction stock allows students to benefit from research using books, not just the internet, in addition to broadening their knowledge on school topics or special interests. Study guides for GCSE and A level safeguards our students’ learning by giving them the means to work independently in a peaceful environment that might otherwise not be available to them.
For daring escapes, mythical creatures and cunning villains look no further than the wide range of fiction books our shelves have to offer. There are graphic novels and manga for those who prefer visual storytelling, choose your own adventures for the problem solvers, classics for the challenge and even novels-in-verse for the poets. Not to mention all of the genres to spark even the most reluctant of reader’s imagination.
Borrowing Books
All students are able to sign out up to 2 books at a time and can keep them for 2 weeks. They simply need to find a book they wish to read and go to the librarian, who will do the rest. Every student is automatically set up with an account when they start so no need to get finger print scans or run the risk of losing a library card.
Library Lessons
All students in KS3 are fortunate to enjoy library lessons once a fortnight. These lessons are designed to help students engage with learning in a different environment, learn how to use the space and its resources effectively, in addition to finding themselves as readers.
Year 7 focus: understanding how the library is organised, understanding characteristics of genres, book cover design.
Year 8 focus: reading for pleasure and reading for purpose, library design.
Year 9 focus: censorship relating to books, the history of the English language, context relating to GCSE texts.
6th Form Study Space
Students in 6th form can enjoy the peaceful study space with access to computers and books. The space is sometimes shared during lesson time by KS3 library lessons but, when it is free, they have access to the whole space.
Stationery Shop
Basic stationery like a black pen, rubber, ruler etc. can be bought using cash from the librarian. All supplies are £1 or less.
